    Where Learning Comes Alive Outdoors

Over the past eighteen months or so, our Forest School has transformed our grounds into a genuinely vibrant, living classroom where children from every single year group step outside to explore, discover, and grow.

Tucked into our beautiful Helmshore surroundings, this sanctuary of outdoor learning has quickly become a game-changing cornerstone of life at St Veronica's, offering every child a unique space to blossom.

    Nurturing Natural Curiosity

Children are natural discoverers, and our Forest School is designed to set that innate curiosity free. From investigating mini-beasts under logs to watching the changing seasons unfold in real time, our outdoor environment encourages pupils to ask big questions and seek out their own answers.

This hands-on, inquiry-based approach turns abstract concepts into real-world understanding, fostering a lifelong love for learning through active discovery.

Gentle Hands and Big Hearts: Animal Care

One of the most cherished additions to our Forest School family is our resident livestock!

Caring for our flock of chickens and friendly guinea pigs gives our pupils a daily lesson in empathy, responsibility, and gentleness.

The children take real pride in feeding, cleaning, and caring for our animals - learning firsthand what it means to be good stewards of creation while developing emotional intelligence and calm, nurturing habits.

Building Resilience and Managing Everyday Hazards

Learning to navigate real-world risk in a controlled, supportive setting is a vital life skill.  At our Forest School, children learn how to respect and safely manage everyday hazards - whether that’s learning fire safety rules around our fire pit, handling simple tools, or navigating uneven terrain.

By assessing risks for themselves under careful guidance, our pupils build genuine confidence, emotional resilience, and the grit needed to tackle challenges both inside and outside the classroom.

    Problem - Solving Under Canvas

Pitching outdoor tents and constructing shelters isn’t just great fun; it’s a masterclass in collaboration and practical physics!

Working together to assemble poles, tie knots, and create weather-tight dens requires active listening, teamwork, and persistence.

When a shelter holds up against the Lancashire breeze, the sense of collective pride and accomplishment is tangible!

Unlocking Creativity in the Exploration Areas

Fun exploration zones - mud kitchens to natural construction spaces, provide an open-ended canvas for imaginative play and creative thinking.

Here, dirty hands are a badge of honour!  Concocting "recipes," building bridges, or crafting art from natural materials, children develop fine motor skills, spatial awareness, and creative problem-solving skills in an environment where there are no wrong answers.

The Magic of Camping and Outdoor Adventure

There is something truly magical about the experience of camping out on school grounds. Our forest school outdoor experiences give children a memorable taste of independence and adventure in a safe, familiar setting.

Sharing stories, singing songs, and looking up at the sky creates unforgettable childhood memories and bonds our school community closer together.

    Supporting Mental Health & Well-being

Fresh air, green spaces, and physical movement are powerful tools for emotional well-being.  Our Forest School offers a calm, grounding sanctuary where children can take a breather from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

For many pupils, the peaceful rhythm of the outdoors builds self-esteem, reduces anxiety, and allows their unique personalities to shine in ways that traditional classroom settings don't always capture.

    Enriching the Whole Curriculum

Forest School isn’t an "extra" - it’s integrated into how we teach.  Science comes to life through life cycles and ecosystems; literacy thrives as children write poetry inspired by nature; art expands through natural pigments and transient art.  By connecting outdoor experiences to our broader curriculum and Catholic values of caring for our common home, we offer a truly holistic education that nurtures mind, body, and spirit.

Growing Together: A Provision for Every Child

From our youngest Reception pupils taking their first exploratory steps to our Year 6 leaders mentoring younger peers, Forest School is an inclusive, joyful experience accessible to all.

As our provision continues to flourish, we look forward to watching generations of St Veronica's pupils grow in confidence, capability, and character right here in the heart of Helmshore - all thanks to Secret Garden Forest School.
